It's Amy's first weekend back and Helen asks how she'll be spending it. Rather than going out on the town or gardening with her mother, she opts to meditate. Her trance is interrupted by memories from her youth with Levi, specifically a camping trip they took on the Kern River. Amy remembers how the good times gave way to hard ones after she suffered a miscarriage. She decides to call up Levi and books them on a camping and kayaking expedition.
Amy and Levi are having a good time along with their instructor and two other couples-until Amy finds Levi's stash of drugs. She dumps them into the river, and Levi, furious, storms off from the campsite. Amy follows and they check into a motel room where Levi drinks and scores drugs.
When they return home, Levi instructs Amy not to try to save him. Getting high is his only escape from the disappointments in his life, and he needs it.
